This Is Not Just a Class. In Suffolk County, the First Question Is Where You Apply.

Most applicants searching for a Suffolk County pistol permit class are not actually worried about the classroom. They are worried about navigating a county with two distinct licensing bureaus, two different sets of paperwork expectations, and a process that is easy to misread if you are working from generic New York advice.

Suffolk County is divided into ten towns — and which town you live in determines which bureau handles your license. Getting that wrong from the start means wasted time, returned paperwork, and a delay you did not need.

Western Suffolk

Apply to SCPD in Yaphank

Towns: Babylon, Brookhaven, Huntington, Islip, and Smithtown.

Office: Suffolk County Police Department Pistol Licensing Bureau
30 Yaphank Avenue, Yaphank, NY 11980

If you live in one of the western five towns, this is your path. We help students understand the SCPD sequence, the forms, and what to expect before they start submitting paperwork.

Eastern Suffolk

Apply to the Suffolk Sheriff in Riverhead

Towns: East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton, and Southold.

Office: Suffolk County Sheriff's Office Pistol License Bureau
100 Center Drive South, Riverhead, NY 11901

If you live in the eastern five towns, pistol licensing runs through the Sheriff's Office. We explain what documents you need so you do not show up missing something obvious on intake day.

Fees & Fingerprinting — What Each Bureau Requires

Western Suffolk — SCPD Yaphank

Application fee: $10

Fingerprint fee: $87.00 (money order only), paid at interview

Fingerprinting: Done by SCPD at the bureau during the licensing and interview stage

Forms: Questionnaire may be typed or printed in black or blue ink

Eastern Suffolk — Sheriff's Office Riverhead

Application fee: $10

Fingerprint fee: $88.25 processing fee

Fingerprinting: Done on-site when you return your completed packet during intake hours

Forms: Must be completed in black ink only

Fee and process information sourced from published bureau guidance and subject to change. Verify current requirements directly with your licensing bureau before submitting your application.

The Full 16+2 Course Requirement

New York's published concealed carry training standard requires 16 hours of classroom instruction plus 2 hours of live-fire training. That requirement applies whether you apply in Yaphank or Riverhead. Your instructor should make that requirement feel organized — not more stressful.

"The Suffolk County pistol permit process has two distinct paths. We built this class to make the training side the clearest, calmest part of an otherwise complicated experience — whichever bureau you belong to."

— Peter Ticali, NY Safe Inc.

Important: Know Before You Enroll

No training provider — including NY Safe Inc. — can guarantee permit approval. The SCPD Pistol Licensing Bureau and the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office make all licensing decisions independently. What we can do is ensure you enter that process well-prepared, well-trained, and clear on what to expect from your specific bureau.

Suffolk Paperwork Has a Reputation. We Help You Slow Down and Get It Right.

A lot of Suffolk applicants are not worried about the classroom. They are worried about the packet. That is where experience matters — and where avoidable mistakes cause the longest delays.

Reference Affidavit Review

We help you think through your four character references and check that the affidavit paperwork is complete, legible, and notarized where required.

Black-Ink Mindset

Suffolk applicants should approach the packet like professionals: clean printing, consistent ink, no sloppy cross-outs, and no rushed last-minute corrections.

Error Prevention

Missing signatures, incomplete explanations, weak reference choices, and messy forms can all create avoidable delays. We help you catch problems before submission.

Support for Normal People

If you have never done anything like this before, you will not be made to feel out of place. We explain things in plain English and keep the process moving.

The NY Safe Difference

Many Suffolk residents do not need a pep talk about being "tactical." They need a calm, competent guide through the paperwork, the terminology, and the next-step confusion that follows the class. Think of NY Safe as your training-side sherpa through the process — regardless of which bureau you belong to.

NY Safe Inc. Is the Non-Tactical Choice for Suffolk County

The people who need a Suffolk County concealed carry class are not mostly hobbyists, influencers, or adrenaline seekers. They are parents, professionals, commuters, small business owners, and first-time firearm owners who want to do this the right way. That is who we serve.

Our training style is professional, supportive, and beginner-focused. We explain things in plain English. We welcome questions. We do not talk down to students. And we do not build the class around ego, bravado, or chest-thumping. You need clear instruction, a lawful mindset, and a company that respects that this is a serious decision with real consequences.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Suffolk County CCW Class

Is this the required Suffolk County 16+2 firearms training?+

Yes. This class is designed to satisfy New York's concealed carry training standard of 16 hours of classroom instruction plus 2 hours of live-fire training for people seeking a concealed carry license in Suffolk County — whether they apply through SCPD in Yaphank or the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office in Riverhead.

Do I apply in Yaphank or Riverhead?+

It depends on your town. The five western towns — Babylon, Brookhaven, Huntington, Islip, and Smithtown — apply through SCPD at 30 Yaphank Avenue. The five eastern towns — East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton, and Southold — apply through the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office at 100 Center Drive South, Riverhead.

We cover this split in class so you leave with clarity about your specific path.

How long is the Suffolk County wait time?+

There is no single Suffolk-wide timeline because the county is split between two licensing bureaus. For the five eastern towns, the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office says applicants should expect a minimum of six to seven months from application to approval or denial. For the five western towns served by SCPD, timing varies and applicants should check directly with the bureau for current estimates.

That is one reason students value working with a training provider that understands the process and helps reduce avoidable mistakes before submission.

Do I need the 16+2 training for a Suffolk County renewal?+

For concealed carry renewals in Suffolk County, New York State requires the firearm safety training course before renewal. Suffolk County concealed carry licenses renew on a three-year cycle. There is an important caveat: local licensing officers may give credit for some or all qualifying prior training completed within the previous five years.

If you are unsure what applies to your renewal, take the conservative approach and confirm before your deadline arrives.

Where do I get my fingerprints done?+

It depends on which bureau handles your application. For the eastern towns, the Sheriff's Office says applicants return the packet in person during intake hours and fingerprinting is done on-site at that time. For the western towns, SCPD fingerprints applicants during the licensing and interview stage at the bureau.

We walk through the overall flow in class so you are not guessing about what happens next.

Is this class beginner friendly?+

Yes. NY Safe Inc. specializes in helping normal, responsible people who may feel overwhelmed by the process, unfamiliar with firearms training culture, or simply tired of sorting through conflicting advice online. We do not run a tactical or macho-style class.

Do you guarantee permit approval?+

No. NY Safe Inc. is a training provider, not the licensing authority, and no legitimate company should promise approval. What we provide is excellent training, careful paperwork guidance, and practical support that helps people feel more prepared and less confused going into the Suffolk County process.

Who is this page for?+

This page is for Suffolk County residents searching for a Suffolk County CCW class, 16+2 firearms training in Suffolk, a Yaphank pistol permit class, a Riverhead pistol permit class, or a supportive, professional environment to complete the required concealed carry course without the usual range attitude.
