Common Questions

How do I get a concealed carry permit in New York?

You must complete a DCJS-approved 18-hour training course (16 hours classroom plus 2 hours live fire), then submit a county-specific application including fingerprints, background check, and character references. Requirements vary by county. NY Safe offers the required training and free consultation guidance to walk you through your specific county’s process.

What does the NY CCW 18-hour class cover?

The class covers firearm safety, New York use-of-force law, legal carry responsibilities, situational awareness, and 2 hours of live-fire range qualification. NY Safe’s curriculum also prepares students for Maryland, DC, Massachusetts, CT, and RI multi-state permit pathways.

Can NY residents get carry permits for other states?

Yes. NY Safe trains NY residents for NJ, Maryland, DC, Utah, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island carry permits — all in New York without out-of-state travel. Your NY CCW class hours count toward most of these additional qualifications within 12 months.

How does the NY ammo transfer service work?

Since September 2023, all online ammo purchases in New York must ship to a licensed dealer for a mandatory NYS NICS background check. NY Safe handles transfers for $25 flat per shipment (up to 5 lot numbers) plus the $2.50 state fee. No round limits. Order in bulk to maximize value.

Is NY Safe the right fit for a complete beginner?

Yes. NY Safe classes welcome students at every experience level. The instruction is structured, supportive, and designed to build real confidence — whether you are picking up a firearm for the first time or working toward an upgrade from a premises permit.
