Before You Register: Do You Need a Pistol License?
NYC, Nassau County and the five Eastern Suffolk towns — East Hampton, Riverhead, Shelter Island, Southampton and Southold — may attend without already holding a pistol license.
Western Suffolk County residents must have a valid New York premises or sportsman pistol license to enroll. If you are unsure whether you are eligible, call 631-706-8700 before purchasing.
Firearm Requirement for Live Fire
If you already hold a New York pistol license: You must bring and use your own lawfully possessed handgun for the live-fire portion. Part of the training process is confirming that you can safely handle and operate the firearm you own.
If you do not hold a New York pistol license: NY SAFE will provide a firearm for your training and live-fire qualification at no additional charge.
Licensed students must follow all applicable possession and transportation requirements. Contact NY SAFE before class for firearm arrival and handling instructions.

Beginner-Friendly Instruction
Small classes allow time for questions, individual coaching and patient instruction. You will learn safe handling, legal responsibilities and practical decision-making without an intimidating atmosphere.
Simulator Preparation
Lead-free laser simulators let you practice grip, trigger control, safe presentation and judgment before live fire. This helps students arrive at the range better prepared and more comfortable.

What to Bring
- Government-issued photo identification
- Your New York pistol license, if you have one
- Pen, notebook and comfortable clothing
- Closed-toe shoes for the live-fire portion
- Food, snacks and any personal medication needed for a long training day
- Licensed New York pistol holders: your own lawfully possessed handgun, transported according to applicable law and NY SAFE’s instructions
Important: Licensed students must use their own handgun during live fire. Unlicensed students will be provided with a firearm. Contact NY SAFE before class for arrival, transportation and handling instructions.

Do I need my own firearm?
If you do not hold a New York pistol license: No. NY SAFE will provide a firearm for your training and live-fire qualification at no additional charge.
If you already hold a New York pistol license: Yes. You must bring and use your own lawfully possessed handgun. This allows the instructor to confirm that you can safely handle and operate the firearm you own.

Is this class appropriate for a first-time shooter?
Yes. No prior shooting experience is required. Instruction begins with safety and fundamentals, and students practice with laser simulators before live fire.
Does this address New York’s concealed-carry training requirement?
The course provides the 16 hours of classroom instruction and 2 hours of live-fire training required for New York concealed-carry applicants. Students must successfully complete the written and live-fire proficiency requirements to receive a completion certificate.
Does this class automatically qualify me for permits in other states?
No single course automatically produces another state’s license. Portions of this training may support additional licensing pathways, but separate applications, fingerprints, photographs, fees or state-specific instruction may be required. Ask us about your intended states before registering for additional training.
